A controversial factory hog farm in Ste-Marie-de-Kent has closed after six years of fighting with its neighbours, leaving behind more millions of gallons of manure. The Metz farm near Bouctouche surrendered its license to operate five months ago. The closure signals the end of a long and difficult relationship with people who lived downwind of the farm. For years, neighbours have complained that manure from the farm's 10,000 hogs made it difficult to breathe and hurt the area's tourism trade. Locals also worried that the manure, which neighouring farmers spread on their fields, would pollute their water table and endanger wildlife. |
