Response to NB Now on CBC; Thursday, July 22nd

Dear Sir/Madam
I have never expected a politician to utter the words mea culpa, but the number of times Shawn and Dale Graham managed to say "pas moi" during the debate on NB Now on the 22Jul was truly astounding. I cannot believe either one of them could be as innocent as they both claim to be. Read the full artical

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The citizens of the Bouctouche River Watershed are not pleased with the Moncton Times and Transcript’s coverage of their justified concerns regarding the colossal hog feeder "barn" under construction in Ste-Marie de Kent. Particularly insulting was your editorial of July 12th , in which your paper stated that: «We also see considerable irony in the fact that Kent County is one of New Brunswick’s high unemployment regions. An operation that will be raising 30,000 pigs over the course of a year will be an important contributors to new jobs, directly and indirectly, Kent County is hardly in a position to reject those jobs» What are you saying here Mr. Editor? Are you saying "jobs at all costs!" that we all live in tar paper shacks and that the possible pollution of one of the most vibrant river valleys is acceptable for 5 jobs? Read the full artical

Dear Mr. Lord:

We have been very involved in the Bouctouche region during the past five years working with the local citizens in developing a highly innovative ecotourism strategy. We have succeeded in developing a vibrant addition to the local economy which has gain both National and International recognition for it’s contribution to the protection of the natural environment and it’s contribution to the local economy. The Bouctouche area ecotourism project has also been retained by ACOA as a model for other communities to emulate. The continued success of this project is deeply related on the ability of the Bouctouche area to maintain a clean and unpolluted environment. Read the full artical

Méga-porcherie

Texte complet

Letter to ATV

I was interested in your report on Metz Farm Inc., in New Canaan NB, that was shown on the late ATV news on 11 July.

I, as a member of the Committee Against Hog Factories, would appreciate if we could be give equal time to respond to Mr. Kristiansen's advertisement. I found that Mr. Shaw's report was totally one sided and gave no information from any source other than that of Metz Farms Inc. Quite apart from the total lack of information from the other side of the issue (Were any other residents of New Canaan interviewed? Read the full artical

To the Editor:

I must comment on the Telegraph Journal article (Tuesday, July 6) regarding my concerns about a pig factory in Ste-Marie. I cannot believe the nerve of the provincial Department of the Environment and the developers of this huge pig factory near Ste-Marie. Had the government and the developers not tried to hide everything from us in the first place, maybe they would not be in such a mess now. Read the full artical

Regarding V.Kristensen, M.LeBlanc, M.Gingrich, M.B.Dykstra letters…

I grew up next door to an excellent farmer and his farm. We never complained about the smell of manure even in spring when it thaws. We take it as a sign of spring. We let this farmer farm our land and he's doing an excellent job. We thank him! I got concerned about this «family-farm» when I saw the magnitude of the building and it's lagoon (275x275x12feet). That's what you call a «family-farm»…! I'm looking for the definition of «family-farm»… Read the full artical

I feel that I have to write in reply to the letters to the editor that you ran in today's July 06, Times Transcript supporting the Metz "farm" project in Ste. Marie.

The letter from M. Leblanc suggests that if we want to avoid pollution we, rural residents and small and medium farmers, should move to the city. My wife's family, along with many others here, have lived in this area for over 100 years. We have a small farm and wish to raise our children on the farm. Hopefully, someday, they will take over the operation here and raise their children here. Read the full artical

To the Hon. Milton Sherwood Minister Agriculture and Rural Development

Dear Mr. Sherwood:
I am writing on behalf of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick to express our concern about the proposed large-scale hog and holstein operation in Sainte-Marie-de-Kent. Specifically, we are concerned about two issues.

First, we do not believe the solution to increasing hog production in New Brunswick is to create factory farms that produce 30,000 hogs each per year. When the previous Liberal administration announced this strategy, the Conservation Council went on record opposing this decision. We believe hog production should be increased by spreading production over existing farms and by having existing farms diversify to include hogs.Read the full artical

Dear Editor:
The people living in the Bouctouche watershed are justified in their concerns about the environmental impact the proposed large-scale hog and holstein operations will have in their area (Kent residents concerned over hog farm's impact - Times and Transcript, June 17, 1999). They are also justified in their anger towards provincial officials. Read the full artical
