About Pfiesteria
piscicida new
Pfiesteria is a dinoflagellate -- it is not a bacterium or a virus.
Dinoflagellates are a natural part of marine ecosystems and are
generally referred to under the broad heading of "algae." Using
their flagella -- slender whip-like tails -- they propel themselves
about, acting very much like animals, though half contain chloroplasts
and perform photosynthesis like other algae. Actually neither plant
nor animal but "protists," these tiny organisms cause what we call
red tides, or mahogany tides.

Botany Laboratory Pfiesteria piscicida Page new
The toxic dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria piscicida, has been implicated
as the primary causative agent of major fish kills and fish disease
events (finfish and shellfish; 103 to 109 finfish) in North Carolina
estuaries, coastal areas, and aquaculture operations. Pfiesteria
and closely related toxic species ("Pfiesteria-like complex") have
also been confirmed in fish kill/disease areas and aquaculture facilities
outside North Carolina from the mid-Atlantic to the Gulf Coast.
Fish kills caused by P. piscicida usually occur in the warmest part
of the year, and often precede low dissolved oxygen levels in the
estuaries. Click

National
campaign for family farms and the environment: new
Environmental and Human Health Impacts of Factory Farms
Wisconsin Hogs produce two to four times as much raw waste as the
average human. The 80,000 hogs raised by Premium Standard Farms
(PSF) in Lincoln Township can generate as much waste as all the
people in Jefferson City, Columbia, and Springfield, Missouri combined.
The manure is stored in open, earthen pits called lagoons. Factory
farm owners would have people to believe that lagoons don't leak
- that bacteria breaks down the animal waste and that the heavier
sludge settles to the bottom of the lagoon creating an effective
seal. The scientific evidence is to the contrary.

Swine Carcasses
The problem faced by a producer is illustrated by the fact that
a 500 sow farrow-to-finish operation (not a large unit by today's
standard) with an excellent animal health program will typically
experience death losses in excess of 100,000 lb per year. Click

She also said that the bill should provide for wider public notice
about swine-production facilities that seek permits to operate in
a county and that such notice should be sent to all property owners
within three miles of the perimeter of a large-scale hog-feeding
operation.

Hog Operations Emissions Study Released
RALEIGH- A new study on the human health effects of living near
industrial hog operations has found that persons living near large
hog farms suffer significantly higher levels of upper respiratory
and gastrointestinal ailments than people living near large cattle
farms or in non-livestock farming areas. The findings are consistent
with other studies of neighbors to large-scale hog operations and
of workers at hog confinement facilities. Click

Raising Hogs
Right: Finding Solutions for North Carolina
North Carolina and Other States. The two-year moratorium on new
hog factories in North Carolina--in effect until September 1, 1999--provides
a real opportunity to develop lasting solutions to the problems
of factory hog farm pollution in the state. If North Carolina takes
advantage of this opportunity by adopting the reforms outlined below,
its success should serve as a model to other states grappling with
these issues. Click
